Abdominal Ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasounds are a safe, non-invasive imaging tool that allows our veterinary team to examine your pet’s internal organs in real time for accurate diagnosis and care.

At Deerfield Animal Care Center, we’re committed to providing your pet with the most advanced diagnostic tools available. One of the most valuable and non-invasive imaging techniques we use is the abdominal ultrasound. This powerful diagnostic tool helps our veterinarians see inside your pet’s abdomen in real-time, allowing us to assess the health of internal organs and detect issues early.

What Is an Abdominal Ultrasound?

An abdominal ultrasound uses sound waves to create a moving image of your pet’s internal organs, such as the liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder, stomach, intestines, and reproductive organs. Unlike X-rays, which provide a snapshot, ultrasounds show us organ shape, size, texture, and movement—without the use of radiation.

When Is an Abdominal Ultrasound Recommended?

Your veterinarian may recommend an ultrasound for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Unexplained weight loss or vomiting

  • Chronic diarrhea or changes in bowel movements

  • Suspected tumors or masses

  • Changes in bloodwork

  • Urinary issues

  • Monitoring pregnancies

  • Evaluating abdominal pain

What to Expect During the Procedure

Ultrasounds are completely painless and typically do not require sedation unless your pet is very anxious or needs to remain completely still. We may need to shave a small area of fur on your pet’s belly for optimal contact with the ultrasound probe. The procedure usually takes 20–45 minutes and is performed in a calm, quiet environment to keep your pet comfortable.
