Liver Biopsies
A liver biopsy is a diagnostic procedure that allows our veterinary team to examine liver tissue and pinpoint the cause of liver disease, guiding accurate and effective treatment.

Overview
When blood tests or imaging suggest liver disease, a liver biopsy can provide the critical answers we need to understand what’s happening—and how best to treat it.
What Is a Liver Biopsy?
A liver biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of liver tissue is collected for laboratory analysis. This allows us to identify the cause of liver abnormalities, such as inflammation, infection, fibrosis, or cancer. It’s an essential tool when other diagnostics are inconclusive or when a definitive diagnosis is needed to guide treatment.
Why Would My Pet Need a Liver Biopsy?
Your veterinarian may recommend a liver biopsy if your pet has:
Elevated liver enzymes on bloodwork
Abnormal findings on ultrasound or X-rays
Unexplained weight loss, lethargy, or decreased appetite
Jaundice (yellowing of skin, eyes, or gums)
Chronic gastrointestinal symptoms
A suspected liver mass
Types of Liver Biopsies
Depending on your pet’s condition and diagnostic needs, we may perform one of the following:
Ultrasound-guided biopsy – minimally invasive and guided by imaging
Laparoscopic biopsy – performed through small incisions with a camera for enhanced precision
Surgical biopsy – done during abdominal surgery when direct access is necessary
Your vet will discuss the best option for your pet’s safety and the most accurate results.
Safe, Compassionate Care
Liver biopsies are performed under general anesthesia with careful monitoring throughout the procedure. We ensure your pet’s comfort and safety every step of the way and will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions and support during recovery.
